FreshPlaza talked to Angelo Benedetti chairman of Unitec SpA during Macfrut.
Always focused on innovation in the produce sector and producing technology for over 35 types of fruit and vegetables, Unitec can help companies improve their potential and profitability while at the same time preventing alienation and repetition during manual labour.
Angelo Benedetti observed that “once, we thought doing things manually was always better, but nowadays that would not be possible. Not only because of the lack of personnel that can select fruit and vegetables in perfect condition at a glance, but also because of the speed with which big volumes must be processed. The technologies available have surpassed human capabilities by far.”
Reducing labour costs is vital for companies who work in the fruit and vegetable sector: “our clients keep on investing in our technologies, which is a testimony to the fact that amortisation times are shorter than people think thanks to savings and a better small as well as large scale efficiency.”
But the benefits are far more than faster processing or cost optimization, and they acquire a commercial value: “only a constant quality over time makes people buy a product over and over. And that’s what our technology does for many types of fruit and vegetables and even for ‘difficult’ products like chestnuts and blueberries!”
Quality is so important that Unitec developed specific solutions to monitor the main parameters while the produce is still on plants: “it is essential to have only perfectly ripe fruit in the warehouse. Chile is particularly careful to this problem and to the technologies that deal with that. In fact, the country exports almost everything to far away countries and therefore the initial quality of fruits affects the success on international markets.”
To conclude, Angelo Benedetti answers the questions about extravagant requests: “I would say that 95% of our work consists in customizing technologies to satisfy the needs or requirements of clients, therefore so far none of the requests have been too extravagant. Quite the opposite in fact, as the bigger the challenge, the more enthusiastic we are!”
